Clever Crook Uses Heat Vision Drone to Hunt Down Weed and Steal It

The police have long used thermal imaging cameras to detect marijuana growing operations. Now, thanks to drones, crooks are getting into the weed-finding game too. Except in their case, they’re trying to find the weed so they can steal it.

html5 browser mp3 audio player
While this slick little HTML5 audio player might not pack all of the features of your favorite desktop media application, it’s still a very cool demonstration of what a Web app can do with access to local resources — like MP3 and OGG files.

Just fire up http://antimatter15.github.com/player/player.html in your HTML5-compatible browser and browse to the topmost folder in your music library. The app will quickly build an index of all your tunes and let you start listening right inside your Web browser. Click on the filter library text, and you can enter a search string — results load as you type.

There’s a volume control, shuffle mode, play/pause control, and you can click and drag to skip forward or rewind during playback. As OMG! Ubuntu points out, you can even save the app to your hard drive and run it offline, which is pretty darn cool.

Not all browsers are equal when it comes to HTML5 implementation, of course. We found that Chrome worked the best, and Firefox was OK. It’s also worth noting that this music player comes from the same developer that created one of our favorite restartless Firefox 4 add-ons, drag2up.

Like most things in the technology world, if you wait long enough a good deal is bound to be found eventually. Such is the case with the iPhone 5s as starting Friday, RadioShack is reducing their pricing for the latest iPhone down to $99 in-store with a qualifying two-year plan on AT&T, Sprint or Verizon.

If you’re still hanging onto an iPhone 4S, the deal is possibly even better. RadioShack will take your iPhone 4s off your hands and give you a $100 credit provided the device is in working order. You can then use that credit purchase an iPhone 5s and ultimately bring the pricing down to free.

RadioShack doesn’t note any time frame for the $99 pricing but chances are it won’t be an ongoing thing. That said, best to take advantage of it while you can in store starting tomorrow. Anyone going to take RadioShack up on their offer?

Evernote has introduced a rather interesting new notebook in conjunction with Moleskine. Users can now capture digital images of notes written on custom-made paper notebooks and enjoy a wealth of extra features over your usual text recognition apps. The Evernote app recognizes notes you want to keep for your own personal reference in the cloud, others to share with colleagues, whether you want an item to be prioritized with a reminder, and where to file notes thanks to a selection of smart stickers. As always, text from uploaded notes is fully searchable.

opera 11.10

The crew in Oslo keeps plugging away at Opera 11.10, and the latest snapshot build includes a number of improvements to Opera’s built-in email client — as well as HTML5-related additions.

On the IMAP front, Opera now supports special folders like sent items, spam, and trash. It also better handles duplicate items in Gmail — such as those which appear in all mail and under your custom labels.

Opera 11.10 now partially supports the HTML5 File API as well, which means your favorite Web apps (like Gmail) may soon begin adding Opera to the list of supported browsers.

You can download the latest Opera 11.10 snapshot for Windows, Mac, or Linux from the official release post.

Update: The Opera 11.10 RC is now available, as pointed out by SlashZaku in the comments. Thanks!

Look At These Beautiful Little Corals Grown Like Popsicles In A Lab

Coral sex is a wonder to behold. On a summer night, always around a full moon, corals somehow all know to release billions of sperm and eggs into the sea, turning the water into a pink miasma of sex. This spawning relies on precise environmental cues, which could get scrambled in climate change. That’s why researchers are trying to get them to spawn in the lab.

tripadvisor windows phone 7TripAdvisor, the popular travel planning tool, has just launched an app for Windows Phone 7. Just like the mobile website, the app allows you to search for anything travel-related — from hotels and flights to restaurants and points-of-interest to visit once you reach your destination.

Geolocation is supported, which allows TripAdvisor to quickly locate places nearby. But while that’s a neat feature, it’s also a bit of a downer — because, really, it’s about the only feature TripAdvisor for WP7 brings to the table that its mobile Web app doesn’t already offer (its browser-based geolocation doesn’t work with WP7 at the moment).

While it’s nice to see Windows Phone 7 users getting some big-name apps, it’d be even nicer if we saw some packing a bit more swagger.

Still, TripAdvisor for WP7 might just be worth installing on your device if you’re frequently on the go — at least until a better browser arrives with the Mango update.
